Frequently asked questions

  • What is the overall style of this tour?

This is a Classic adventure style tour, designed for exploring the wonders of the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, and Lake Manyara, with emphasis on wildlife viewing and local interactions.
  • What type of wildlife can I expect to see?

You will have excellent chances of spotting the 'big five' (lion, cheetah, buffalo, elephant, and giraffe) as well as phenomenal birdlife, tree-climbing lions, and hippos.
  • What kind of accommodation is provided on this safari?

The tour includes simple hotels (3 nights), full-service camping (4 nights), and permanent tented camps (2 nights).
  • What is the camping experience like?

It is a full-service camping experience where staff pitch tents, prepare and serve meals, and handle washing up. Tents are canvas dome tents with mesh insect nets and comfortable 4cm thick mattresses. Campsites can be basic, with facilities like long-drop latrines, simple cold showers, and no electricity in some national park locations. Camps are open to the natural environment, so a torch/flashlight is recommended for walking around at night.
  • Do I need to bring a sleeping bag?

Sleeping bags are not required as all bedding is supplied. However, you have the option to rent a sleeping bag for $10 USD per night if you prefer.
  • Are private rooms available for solo travelers?

Single travelers joining group trips are paired in twin or multi-share accommodation with someone of the same sex. If you book the 'My Own Room/Tent' option, you will receive your own single room/tent for all night stops.
  • What meals are included during the tour?

The tour includes 9 breakfasts, 8 lunches, and 6 dinners. When an evening meal is not included, your hotel will have a restaurant, or you will be advised of local establishments.
  • Can dietary restrictions be accommodated?

  • What kind of vehicles are used for safari drives?

Private 5 or 7-seat 4x4 safari vehicles with sliding windows and large pop-up roofs are used for wildlife viewing. For larger groups, two vehicles will be used.
  • How will we travel between Kenya and Tanzania?

The journey between Kenya and Tanzania will be done on a public shuttle, which are large mini buses with seating for 22-24 passengers.
  • What currency should I bring for Kenya and Tanzania?

The local currencies are Kenyan Shilling (KES) and Tanzanian Shilling (TSH). US Dollars ($US) are the easiest foreign currency to exchange, though British Pounds and Euros may also be accepted. Notes older than 2006 are not accepted for US dollars due to forgery concerns. You will need $USD cash to pay for visas at borders.
  • Can I use credit or debit cards during the tour?

Visa/Plus system cards are the most widely accepted debit cards. Credit cards can be used in major cities and towns only, usually with a 5%-10% fee. It's recommended to carry a combination of foreign currency cash and debit/credit cards for cash advances, as ATMs can run out of cash or experience power outages in rural areas.
  • What are the tipping guidelines?

Tipping is an expected, though not compulsory, part of your tour. Suggested per person daily guidelines are: CEO: $5 USD, Driver: $5 USD, Supply crew: $2-5 USD. For local guides, $1 USD per couple of hours. For restaurant/café servers, 10% of the bill is customary.
  • Is an emergency fund recommended?

Yes, it is recommended to have access to at least an additional USD $200 (or equivalent) as an 'emergency' fund for unforeseen circumstances.
  • Are there any specific health requirements or vaccinations needed?

It is compulsory to show a valid Yellow Fever Certificate if traveling from or transiting through a Yellow Fever endemic country. Malaria is also present in some regions, and speaking to your doctor about preventative medication (prophylaxis) combined with insect repellent is recommended. Always consult your family physician or local travel clinic at least one month before departure for the most up-to-date health information and inoculations.
  • What if I have a pre-existing medical condition?

Travelers with a pre-existing medical condition are required to complete a short medical questionnaire, which must be signed by their physician, to ensure they have the necessary fitness and mobility for the trip.
  • What should I do if my international luggage is delayed or lost upon arrival in Nairobi?

Luggage delays can occur. Keep important documentation and valuables on your person, and a change of clothes in your hand luggage. If luggage does not arrive, it typically takes 48-72 hours. You may need to purchase essential items locally and hire someone to follow up with the airline. The tour operator will assist in organizing this, but costs are not their responsibility. Keep all receipts for insurance claims.
  • Who will lead the tour?

You will be accompanied by a Chief Experience Officer (CEO) throughout the journey, who manages the trip. In Arusha, an expert driver/guide, who is a skilled and certified safari guide, will also join the team.
  • Can I leave extra luggage at the start hotel?

Yes, if you are traveling with a large amount of luggage and will be returning to Nairobi later in your trip, you may leave a portion of it at the start hotel, as storage facilities are available.
  • What about electricity and charging devices during the tour?

The power supply in Kenya and Tanzania is nominally 240VAC, 50hz, but variable voltage and sporadic power cuts are common. There are no charging facilities at the campsites in Serengeti and Ngorongoro. Travelers will be able to charge portable power banks in the vehicle, but only when it is in motion.
